Sourcegraph Cody
PaidEnterprise AI coding assistant using code search and repository context
About
Sourcegraph Cody is Sourcegraph’s code-aware AI assistant, currently supported for Sourcegraph Enterprise and available through supported editor integrations and clients according to enterprise configuration. It uses repository and code-search context to answer questions, generate and edit code, suggest completions, and help debug software. Cody’s current commercial focus is enterprise deployment; Sourcegraph discontinued Cody Free, Cody Pro, and Enterprise Starter access in 2025, while Enterprise customers continue to be supported.
✨ Key Features
- Chat about code with context from open files, repositories, symbols, and permitted remote code
- Generate code, explain implementation details, and suggest fixes
- Provide single-line and multi-line code completions while typing
- Edit selected code through Quick Edit or the chat-panel edit mode
- Suggest contextual auto-edits based on cursor position and recent changes
- Debug errors and propose code changes to resolve them
- Refactor code through inline edits and reviewable diffs
- Create reusable prompts in a shared Prompt Library
- Filter repositories and context so excluded code is not used for chat or autocomplete
- Use Sourcegraph Search and code intelligence to retrieve relevant local or remote context
- Connect GitHub, GitLab, IDEs, eligible browser clients, CLI, and self-hosted Sourcegraph instances
- Use MCP support and Bring Your Own Key/LLM controls where enabled by Enterprise configuration
💳 Pricing
- Cody Free: discontinued for Sourcegraph.com users on July 23, 2025; new signups were stopped before that date.
- Cody Pro: discontinued for Sourcegraph.com users on July 23, 2025; it is not a current consumer subscription.
- Enterprise Starter: new Enterprise Starter workspaces no longer include Cody.
- Cody Enterprise: remains supported for organizations using Sourcegraph Enterprise. Pricing is handled through Sourcegraph’s enterprise sales process rather than a public per-user price table.
- Self-hosted Enterprise customers may configure Cody with supported model providers or BYOK options; model-provider costs and enterprise agreements are separate from any Sourcegraph contract.
- The historical Free/Pro pricing must not be used for a current purchase decision. Current eligibility, deployment, model, retention, and contract terms should be confirmed with Sourcegraph.
⚖️ Alternatives Compared
| Tool | Best fit | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Sourcegraph Cody | Enterprise code intelligence with repository-wide context | Combines Sourcegraph Search/code graph context, IDE assistance, eligible clients, and enterprise deployment controls |
| JetBrains AI Assistant | AI assistance inside JetBrains IDEs | Focuses on JetBrains IDE workflows and JetBrains licensing/model options rather than Sourcegraph repository intelligence |

🎯 Use Cases
- Asking questions about a large repository without manually locating every relevant file
- Generating or completing boilerplate code while working in an IDE
- Refactoring selected code and reviewing the resulting diff
- Investigating an error and asking Cody to suggest or apply a fix
- Understanding unfamiliar APIs, symbols, and usage patterns across a codebase
- Creating team prompts for repeatable code-review or documentation tasks
- Restricting AI context to repositories a user is authorized to read
- Using Cody from VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, eligible browser clients, or CLI
- Deploying an AI coding assistant for a secure enterprise or self-hosted Sourcegraph instance
- Connecting enterprise model providers or BYOK configurations under administrator control
Browser availability
Sourcegraph’s February 25, 2026 release notice says Deep Search replaces Cody Web for Deep Search customers. This change does not affect Cody in the editor. Browser chat is therefore deployment- and customer-dependent, rather than universally available. See the removals notice and Free/Pro plan retirement.
